Does the Messenger II bags have a bigger main compartment than the messenger basic bags?

If you're looking for a large main compartment, than the Messenger II is your best bet. The main compartment of the Messenger II bag is a little bit larger than the basic Messenger. The Messenger II is approximately 17inches wide and 14inches tall and the basic Messenger bag is 16inches wide by 14inches tall.
