Home For The Holidays

Hey Dudes,

If you’re like me and choose to hang low this Holiday and stay at home with the fam, then here are some tips to help pass the time.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “I’m bored!” in my house from the mouths of my little dudes and diva. So here are some ways to avoid hearing that phrase and have fun at the same time.

Cook with the kids – you can make this task last most of the day.  Plan your meal and take the kiddies shopping with you for the ingredients.  Pick something to make that’s not too challenging – remember you are going to be eating it too.  Worse case scenario if it ends up tasting horrible you can always call domino’s to the rescue.  To make this tip even more fun, pick a theme and include music to make it more festive.

Games are great, but even better - have a game Olympics – each board game or any other game or contest counts towards the tally where a grand prize-winner is crowned on New Year’s Eve.   Keep a score-board and come up with a great prize. (Check your ego and competitive spirit at the front door for this one.)

Give gifts that will provide activity and entertainment during your time off.  When purchasing your holiday gifts this year, think about what everyone will actually use and enjoy during the holiday break.  Last year I bought the family a Wii – I can’t tell you how much we all use it throughout the year and especially during downtime!  It rocks – as we all do it together now with Rock Band.  New games also make great gifts!

Do something physical each day.  Take a hike, a nature walk, go skating, have a snowball fight, build a snowman, ride bikes (weather permitting), create a scavenger hunt with a few families and divide up into teams with parents and kids and run around the neighborhood finding clues. (This sounds corny but it is so much fun, especially if you make some of the clues easy for the kids and others really hard for the adults!)

For those with little ones, have a stroll-a-thon and invite as many families as you know to participate.  Walk to great lunch place and reward yourselves with a great meal.

Find ways to help others, it is never too early to teach your kids about giving back. (You’ll feel good about this one all year long!)

Bus token fund – collect bottles and cans, recycle them and purchase bus tokens – hand them out to the homeless or bring them to a shelter.

Have a movie marathon where each family member picks their favorite flick. Make lots of popcorn, put sleeping bags on the floor and have some fun.

If friends in the neighborhood are around, create a night at each house and rotate the fun.  Have a Disco or Dance Party night where young and old can get their groove on.

Football Fantasy Day – get the kids, invite some friends, have a great grub buffet and all the Dads can give the wives the afternoon off to get a manicure or shop or whatever they do.

Get in touch with your artistic side.  Come up with fun and DOABLE art projects to work on with the kids.  If you are handy, you may want to tackle a bigger project, build a go cart, fort, etc.  If you aren’t, know your limits and find something with washable paint, glue, cotton balls and popsicle sticks.  Here are a few resources to get some ideas:

These are just a handful of ideas to get you started.  Once you start thinking about I know you Dudes will come up with some great ideas.  Please share them with us and we will post them of all of the other Dudes out there.
